Huo Zhongru (霍仲孺, Hoắc Trọng Nhũ), native of Pingyang in Hedong, was a Western Han petty official whose bloodline produced two of the most consequential figures in Chinese imperial history: Champion Marquis Huo Qubing and Grand General Regent Huo Guang.
While serving as a low-ranking clerk in the estate of Princess Pingyang, Huo Zhongru had a relationship with maidservant Wei Shaor, fathering Huo Qubing in 140 BC. Returning home to Pingyang without marrying Wei Shaor, he wed a local woman and fathered Huo Guang. In 121 BC, while marching his elite cavalry army across Hedong on the Western Expedition, the celebrated Champion Marquis Huo Qubing halted his entire army, dismounted, and fell to his knees in the dust before his humble father, buying him vast fertile estates and taking his half-brother Huo Guang to the capital, where Huo Guang eventually became regent of the Han Empire.

Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji, vol. 111): “Huo Qubing bowed his forehead to the ground before Huo Zhongru, saying: ‘Qubing was separated from father in youth and knew not his countenance.’ Huo Zhongru wept and embraced the general, unable to speak for joy.”
