Biography & Historical Record
Huangfu Li (皇甫郦, Hoàng Phủ Lệ) is the Liangzhou-tongued courtier whom Emperor Xian (汉献帝, Hán Hiến Đế) sends in Romance Chapter 13 to talk Li Jue (李傕, Lý Thôi) and Guo Si (郭汜, Quách Dĩ) into a truce. He is not a Dong Zhuo field officer; he is a Han envoy who happens to be a fellow westerner.
The historical Li Jue–Guo Si war of 192–195 is real. A named Huangfu Li as the shouting envoy is novel craft on that chaos: two former Dong Zhuo lieutenants holding emperor and ministers, Yang Biao mediating, Jia Xu peeling allies, Yang Feng and Dong Cheng escorting the court east.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 13 (Li Jue and Guo Si Wage a Great War; Yang Feng and Dong Cheng Rescue the Emperor): Li Jue holds the emperor; Guo Si holds the ministers. After Yang Biao (杨彪, Dương Bưu) briefly parts them, the emperor orders Huangfu Li to both camps. Guo Si: if Li Jue sends out the Son of Heaven, he will release the lords. Li Jue boasts of beating Lü Bu. Huangfu Li answers with Hou Yi and Dong Zhuo’s head: Guo kidnapped the ministers; Li kidnapped the emperor. Li Jue draws. Yang Feng (杨奉, Dương Phụng) and Jia Xu (贾诩, Giả Hủ) stop the killing. Huangfu Li shouts that Li Jue means to murder the emperor. Hu Miao (胡邈, Hồ Miểu) begs silence and is cursed. The emperor sends Huangfu Li back to Liangzhou. On the road he tells western troops that following Li Jue is rebellion. Wang Chang (王昌, Vương Xương) — not the later Wei 王昶 — will not chase him. Jia Xu then peels the Qiang away.
