Biography & Historical Record

Hou Tai (侯太, Hầu Thái) was an influential nobleman and local official of Youzhou during the late Eastern Han dynasty. He was the father of Lady Hou (侯氏, Hầu thị), who married the formidable northern warlord Gongsun Zan (公孙瓒, White Horse General), and grandfather of Gongsun Xu (公孙续).

Hou Tai commanded great prestige among the northern frontier gentry along the borders of Youzhou. Recognizing Gongsun Zan’s extraordinary courage, martial prowess, and striking voice during Gongsun Zan’s early youth as a petty clerk, Hou Tai gave his daughter to him in marriage and provided the financial and political sponsorship that launched Gongsun Zan’s meteoric rise to warlord supremacy in northern China.
