Han Zhen (韩祯, Hàn Trinh) is a fictional Shu frontier officer in Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He does not appear in Chen Shou’s Sanguozhi or other standard Han–Three Kingdoms histories; the name exists solely to anchor a logistical beat in Zhuge Liang’s fourth northern campaign arc. As garrison commander of Xiping Pass (西平关, Tây Bình Quan) on the Qiang frontier, he functions as the novel’s early-warning node when non-Han allies of Wei march against Shu.

His entire literary role is compressed into a messenger’s report: when the Qiang king Cheliji and his ministers Yadan and Yueji lead fifteen thousand iron-chariot troops against the pass, Han Zhen dispatches urgent word to Zhuge Liang’s headquarters. That alarm sets up Zhang Bao and Guan Xing volunteering to meet the threat — and, more importantly, introduces the “iron chariot” (铁车) tactic that Ma Dai later counters with fire and rolling boulders. Han Zhen himself is never shown fighting on page; he is a narrative hinge, not a developed personality. Modern ROTK indices and Diaochan.xyz treat him as a named pass commander whose sole function is to translate frontier danger into plot momentum for the Qiang subplot.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 94 (Zhuge Liang Defeats the Qiang in the Snow; Sima Yi Captures Meng Da on Schedule): While Sima Yi races to suppress Meng Da’s rebellion at Xincheng, word reaches the Shu camp that the Western Qiang, bribed by Wei, have mobilized under King Cheliji. The garrison commander at Xiping Pass, Han Zhen, sends an express report (文报). Zhuge Liang asks who will repel the Qiang; Zhang Bao and Guan Xing step forward. The chapter then shifts to the iron-chariot battle in which Ma Dai’s fire attack breaks the Qiang line — Han Zhen’s name-drop is the trigger for that entire subplot.
