Guo Tong

Biography & Historical Record

Guo Tong (郭统, Quách Thống) was the son and heir of Grand General Guo Huai (郭淮, Quách Hoài), styled Boji (伯济, Bá Tế), the long-serving defender of Wei’s western frontier against Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng) and later Jiang Wei (姜维, Khương Duy). When Guo Huai died in 255 AD, Guo Tong succeeded to the Marquisate of Yangqu (阳曲侯) and was appointed Inspector of Jingzhou (荆州刺史), responsible for southern border security against Eastern Wu.

His mother was Lady Wang (王氏), sister of Wang Ling (王凌, Vương Lăng) — linking the Guo frontier house to the powerful Wang clan of Huainan. His son Guo Zheng (郭正, Quách Chính) continued the Yangqu line.

General: Guo Tong does not appear in the novel. His father Guo Huai (郭淮, Quách Hoài) is a major Wei western commander from Zhuge Liang’s northern expeditions through Jiang Wei’s raids; Guo Tong’s Jingzhou inspectorship belongs to mid-third-century Wei administration attested in Sanguozhi.
