Empress Yang Zhi (武悼皇后杨芷, Vũ Điệu hoàng hậu; 259–292; courtesy name Jilan 季兰; nickname Nanying 男英), native of Huayin in Hongnong, was the second empress of founding Emperor Wu of Jin, Sima Yan (司马炎), and Empress Dowager during the reign of Emperor Hui (Sima Zhong). She was the daughter of Grand Tutor Yang Jun (杨骏) and first cousin of Sima Yan’s first empress, Yang Yan.

Crowned empress in 276 following Yang Yan’s deathbed wish, Empress Yang was celebrated for exquisite beauty, gentleness, and filial piety. Following Sima Yan’s death in 290, her father Yang Jun seized supreme regency power. This provoked the ferocious jealousy of Emperor Hui’s vicious empress, Jia Nanfeng (Giả Nam Phong). In 291, Jia Nanfeng engineered a bloody midnight palace coup with Sima Wei, slaughtering Yang Jun and thousands of his clan members.

When Empress Dowager Yang Zhi desperately wrote an imperial letter with an arrow offering rewards to anyone who rescued her father, Jia Nanfeng used the document to declare her a traitor. Stripping Yang Zhi of her empress dowager title, Jia Nanfeng imprisoned her in the bleak Jinyong Castle (金墉城) and ruthlessly cut off all food supplies. After agonizingly surviving for eight days by eating scraps of silk cloth, Empress Yang Zhi starved to death at age thirty-four. Her spirit tablet was only restored decades later by Emperor Cheng of Jin.

Role in History (Jin Shu)

Book of Jin (Jin Shu, vol. 31, Biographies of Empresses): “Empress Yang was gentle and filially devoted, but her father’s overreach brought destruction. Jia Nanfeng shut her within Jinyong Castle, withholding grain for eight days until she perished in misery.”
