Biography & Historical Record

Du Shang (度尚, Độ Chuộng) was an Eastern Han general and administrator who rose to fame suppressing the Wuling and Kuaiji rebellions and later served as Inspector of Jing Province. He is best remembered in literary history for commissioning the famous Cao E stele inscription — the riddle “黃絹幼婦,外孫虀臼” (yellow silk, young wife, daughter’s son, pickled garlic mortar) that Cao Cao and Yang Xiu would later decode in the novel. Du Shang memorialized the filial daughter Cao E (曹娥), who drowned trying to recover her father’s body from the Cao’e River in Shangyu.

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms he appears only in the Cai Yan backstory of Chapter 71, when Cao Cao visits Cai Wenji at her Blue Field estate and the narrative recounts how Du Shang ordered the stele erected and the boy prodigy Handan Chun wrote the text at age thirteen. Du Shang is a historical Eastern Han figure, not a Three Kingdoms combatant.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 71 (Cao Cao’s Forces Conquer Hanzhong; Zhang Liao Terrorizes Xiaoyao Ford): En route to campaign in Hanzhong, Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo) stops at the Blue Field estate of Cai Yan (蔡琰, Thái Diễm) — the poetess Cai Wenji. She tells how her father Cai Yong (蔡邕, Thái Ung) once visited the tomb of the filial daughter Cao E (曹娥, Tào Nga). The narrative explains that Shangyu magistrate Cao Xu (曹旴, Tào Hà) drowned while performing shamanic rites; his fourteen-year-old daughter Cao E threw herself into the river and recovered his body five days later. Du Shang (度尚, Độ Chuộng), then Shangyu prefect, memorialized her as a paragon of filial piety and ordered Handan Chun (邯郸淳, Hàm Đan Thuần), aged thirteen, to compose the stele inscription without revision.
