Biography & Historical Record
Du Hui (杜徽, Đỗ Huy; c. 160s–c. 230s AD), courtesy name Guofu (国辅, Quốc Phụ), was an esteemed elder scholar, philosopher, and senior advisor of the state of Shu Han. Hailing from Fudao in Qianwei Commandery (modern Yibin, Sichuan), he studied classical Confucian texts under celebrated scholar Ren An.
Although severely hard of hearing (often referred to as the Deaf Sage of Shu), Du Hui possessed razor-sharp intellectual discernment. When Zhuge Liang governed Shu as Chancellor in 224 AD, he personally recruited Du Hui. Because Du Hui was deaf, Zhuge Liang sat beside him and communicated via brushed calligraphy, famously writing: “Virtuous elders like you need not bear weapons; your moral prestige and pure counsel alone illuminate our state!” Appointed Gentleman Consultant (谏议大夫), Du Hui provided invaluable administrative guidance throughout the pacification of the South.
