Dong Chong

Dong Chong (董重, Đổng Trọng), also recorded as Dong Zhong (董宠) in some annals, was an Eastern Han general from Hejian (河间, Hà Gián) and a leading male member of the Dong clan faction at Emperor Ling’s court. He was kin to Empress Dowager Dong (孝仁皇后, Empress Xiaoren) — mother of Emperor Ling — and thus connected to the imperial line: catalogs list him as her brother or, in Hou Hanshu phrasing, as nephew (兄子) of the empress dowager, i.e. son of her brother; either way he was a pillar of the Dong family’s influence alongside the dowager who sold offices and favored Prince Liu Xie (later Emperor Xian). He rose to General of Agile Cavalry (驃騎将军, Phi kỵ tướng quân) in 188 with over a thousand troops. When Emperor Ling died and the two empress dowagers — Dong and Empress He — vied for power, Dong Chong clashed with He Jin. In 189 He Jin besieged his residence, stripped his rank, and drove him to suicide in prison; Empress Dowager Dong died of grief shortly after, and the He clan absorbed court control until the eunuch massacre and Dong Zhuo’s entry into Luoyang.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 2 (Zhang Fei Whips the Government Inspector; He Jin Plots to Destroy the Eunuchs) introduces the Dong–He struggle at Luoyang: Grand Empress Dowager Dong and her supporter Dong Chong oppose Empress Dowager He and He Jin over influence over the young Emperor Shao. The novel follows the historical outline — the Dong faction favored Liu Xie, the He faction backed Liu Bian, and the two dowagers blocked each other until He Jin moved against the Dong clan. Chapter 3 continues the crisis after He Jin’s assassination and Dong Zhuo’s arrival. Dong Chong himself is not given a lengthy scene; he belongs to the court roster of the 189 power struggle that ends with his death, the grand empress dowager’s demise, and the opening of the eunuch purge that reshapes the capital before Dong Zhuo’s coup in Chapter 4.
