Biography & Historical Record
Consort Wang (王美人, Vương Mỹ nhân; ?–181 AD), personal name Wang Rong (王荣), was an imperial consort of Emperor Ling of the Eastern Han dynasty and the biological mother of the final Han monarch, Emperor Xian (刘协, Lưu Hiệp). Hailing from Handan in Zhao Commandery, she was the granddaughter of Wang Zhang and daughter of Wang Pang, belonging to a cultured gentry lineage.
Celebrated for her transcendent beauty, graceful demeanor, and literary talent, Wang Rong entered the imperial harem and quickly won the deep affection of Emperor Ling (汉灵帝). Aware of the violent jealousy of Empress He (何皇后), Consort Wang attempted to ingest abortifacients upon becoming pregnant, but failed. In 181 AD, she gave birth to Prince Liu Xie.
Shortly after giving birth, Empress He secretly sent poison into Consort Wang’s quarters, killing her in cold blood. Emperor Ling was grief-stricken and nearly deposed Empress He, but was dissuaded by court eunuchs bribed by He Jin. Prince Liu Xie was entrusted to Emperor Ling’s mother, Empress Dowager Dong, for protection. Following Emperor Xian’s accession, Consort Wang was posthumously honored as Empress Linghuai (灵怀皇后) and reinterred at Wenyuan Mausoleum.
