Biography & Historical Record
Consort Dong (董贵人, Đổng Quý Nhân), also called Lady Dong (董夫人), was an Honoured Lady (贵人) of Emperor Xian and daughter of the imperial relative Dong Cheng (董承). She became a tragic figure in the power struggle between the Han court and Cao Cao: when Dong Cheng’s secret plot to assassinate Cao Cao (the Gengzi Plot of 200 AD) was exposed, Consort Dong — then pregnant — was arrested and executed despite the Emperor’s desperate pleas to spare her and the unborn child.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 24 introduces the Dong Cheng faction at the Xu court. Chapter 78 (Guan Lu Predicts the Han’s Fate; Five Generals Plot to Slay Cao Cao) brings the tragedy to its climax: after Dong Cheng’s letter plotting Cao Cao’s death is discovered, Cao Cao orders a purge. Emperor Xian begs for the life of his pregnant consort Consort Dong, but Cao Cao refuses. Consort Dong curses Cao Cao before she is dragged away and executed — one of the novel’s most poignant scenes of imperial helplessness under warlord rule.
