Biography & Historical Record
Chunyu Dao (died 208 AD) is a fictional military officer appearing in Luo Guanzhong’s classic historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the novel, he is depicted as a subordinate commander and officer serving under Cao Ren, a senior grand general of the northern warlord Cao Cao.
During the chaotic Battle of Changban (Dangyang) in 208 AD, as Cao Cao’s main expeditionary force relentlessly pursued Liu Bei’s fleeing troops and civilian convoy, Chunyu Dao commanded a detachment of over 1,000 soldiers. Brandishing a heavy broadsword (mã tấu), Chunyu Dao scoured the battlefield and successfully ambushed and captured Mi Zhu, a high-ranking civil advisor and brother-in-law of Liu Bei. Chunyu Dao ordered Mi Zhu bound tightly on horseback and led his contingent back toward camp, eager to present his high-value prisoner to Cao Ren and claim a grand military reward.
However, on his return route, Chunyu Dao unexpectedly encountered Shu Han’s legendary general Zhao Yun (Zhao Zilong), who was single-handedly riding through enemy lines to search for Liu Bei’s missing family and infant son, Liu Shan (A’Dou). Seeing Mi Zhu bound on horseback, Zhao Yun flew into a rage, let out a thunderous roar, and charged forward at full speed. Before Chunyu Dao could raise his weapon or react to defend himself, Zhao Yun thrust his spear directly through Chunyu Dao’s chest, lifting him off his saddle and slaying him instantly. Zhao Yun severed Mi Zhu’s ropes, captured two horses from the fleeing Wei soldiers, and escorted Mi Zhu to safety.
Historically, Chunyu Dao is entirely a fictional character created by Luo Guanzhong, as no record of his existence appears in Chen Shou’s Records of the Three Kingdoms. His death serves as the opening victory for Zhao Yun’s legendary rampage at Changban, establishing Zhao Yun’s martial invincibility before his iconic rescue of infant A’Dou through fifty divisions of Cao Cao’s army.
