Biography & Historical Record
Chen Yu (陈瑀, 陳瑀, Trần Vũ; c. 150s–?), courtesy name Gongwei (公玮, Công Vĩ), was an Eastern Han official and military commander from the distinguished Xiapi Chen clan. He was the son of Grand Commandant Chen Qiu (陈球) and cousin of minister Chen Gui (陈珪).
Known for his stern administrative bearing, Chen Yu was appointed Administrator of Wu Commandery by Yuan Shu. When Yuan Shu proclaimed himself Emperor in 197 AD, Chen Yu severed ties with him and allied with the Han imperial court and Cao Cao. Chen Yu established his military headquarters at Haixi, plotting to attack Sun Ce’s northern flank in coordination with local regional forces.
However, Sun Ce dispatched Lu Fan in a lightning amphibious assault, capturing Haixi and routing Chen Yu’s garrison. Chen Yu escaped north on horseback to Ye and was warmly received by Cao Cao, who appointed him General Who Pacifies the Distant (安远将军), placing him in charge of eastern military logistics.
