Cao Kai (曹楷, Tào Giai) was the son of the “Yellow-Bearded General” Cao Zhang (曹彰, Tào Chương), styled Ziwen (子文, Tử Văn), and a grandson of Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo). When Cao Zhang died suddenly in 223 AD, Cao Kai inherited the title of Prince of Rencheng (任城王) and later held the kingship of Jiyin (济阴王). His son Cao Fang (曹芳, Tào Phương), styled Lanqing (兰卿, Lan Khanh), was adopted by Emperor Cao Rui (曹睿, Tào Duệ) as heir and ascended the Wei throne in 239 AD as the third Wei emperor — making Cao Kai the biological father of an adopted emperor.

The Rencheng line thus bridged Cao Cao’s warrior sons and the Sima-era court that would eventually dominate Cao Fang’s reign.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

General: Cao Kai does not appear in the novel. His father Cao Zhang (曹彰, Tào Chương) is a major warrior prince famed for suppressing the Wuhuan and fighting at Hanzhong; his son Cao Fang (曹芳, Tào Phương) is enthroned in later historical chapters beyond the novel’s main narrative. Cao Kai is attested in Sanguozhi Wei royal genealogy.
